This database of Kentucky marriages from 1802-1850 contains over 145,000 names. Each entry includes groom, bride, marriage date, county, and state. Every name is indexed so you can search for one name, or two names that are linked.

Admitted to the Union as the 15th state in 1792, Kentucky was settled predominantly by Irish, German, and English men and women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This database contains marriage records from Allen, Boyle, Butler, Caldwell, Christian, Clay, Crittenden, Garrard, Greenup, Henderson, Henry, Hopkins, Jessamine, Larue, Lawrence, Lincoln, Logan, Lyon, Madison, Magoffin, Marshall, McCracken, Menifee, Mercer, Monroe, Morgan, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Taylor, Todd, Washington, and Webster Casey counties between 1851 and 1900. Taken from microfilm copies of original county documents, each record provides spouses' names, marriage date, and county of residence. Records for "white" individuals and "colored" individuals were kept in separate volumes. This database only includes the volumes of "white" marriages.Allen County was formed in 1815 from Barren and Warren counties. The records in this database cover the years 1851 through 1879.

Situated across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio, the three Kentucky counties of Boone, Campbell, and Kenton boasted a total population of over 40,000 in 1850. This database seeks to illuminate a few of those residents by listing marriages in the three counties between 1795 and 1850. Information provided includes the names of bride and groom, marriage date and location. This collection represents every publicly available bit of information on marriages in the area before 1850.

This database is an index to over 5.9 million births recorded in Kentucky between 1911 and 1999. Information contained in this index includes child’s name, child’s gender, birth date, birth county, mother’s name, registered date, volume year, volume number, and birth certificate number. Note: Not all entries will contain all of this information. There is a small bug in the data and records from Rowan County are misindexed as Breathitt County. Researchers may want to search both counties, and be cautious in the interpretation of these records. With the information provided in this index, you may be able to obtain a copy of a birth certificate. If possible, it is important that you do this because oft times more information is provided in an original record than is provided in its index. This database is an index to about 2.3 million individuals who were married in the state of Kentucky between 1973 and 1999. Information that may be found in this database for each entry includes groom's name, groom's age, groom's county of residence, groom's marital status (never married; last marriage ended by death; last marriage ended by divorce; or last marriage ended by annulment), groom's race, bride's name, bride's age, bride's county of residence, bride's race, marriage date, marriage county, county of marriage license, marriage certificate number, volume number, and volume year. Copies of marriage records are available through the Vital Records branch of the Kentucky Department of Health. They maintain marriage records beginning in June 1958. This important database contains an index to more than 2.6 million death records of individuals living in Kentucky from 1911 on. All records contain the following information: name of the individual, date of death, county of death, county of residence, age at death, and volume and certificate number.

Kentucky began keeping civil birth records as early as 1852. However, it was only required for ten years. Other attempts at birth registration ranged from 1874-1879 and 1892-1910. This collection from the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives does not list all births in Kentucky from 1852-1910. Information in the records can include the name, gender, color/race, date and place of birth, parents' names, and the age and birthplace of the parents.

This collection contains death certificates from 1911-1953, returns of death for various counties from 1852-1910, and other related sources. Information in each record will vary by source, but generally includes the name, race, age, gender, date and place of death, date and place of birth, residence, and parents' names and birthplaces.

This collection contains marriage records for all Kentucky counties except for McCreary and Mercer. Some years may be missing for other counties. Information may include the names, ages, birthplaces, and residences of the bride and groom; date and place of the marriage; and the birthplaces of the parents.

This database is a collection of Indiana marriage indexes covering various years and counties. To see specifically what is included in this database (counties and years covered), please see the bottom of this page. This collection is comprised of indexes created by two agencies - the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Jordan Dodd of Liahona Research (who extracted information from records on microfilm at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah). Information contained in these indexes includes:

• Marriage date
• Marriage county
• Source information

For the source information you will see either "Works Progress Administration" or, "Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah" (for entries created by Jordan Dodd). If available, a microfilm number is provided for records from the FHL. Likewise, the WPA entries provide original record locations, as well as book information (title, volume, page number), useful for finding individuals in the printed versions of the WPA indexes.

Note: You may find duplicate records of the same marriage in this database, with the only difference being the source. These records were not removed because Ancestry.com wanted to provide the most amount of information about a marriage to the customer.

History of Marriage Records in Indiana:

Marriage licenses became mandatory in 1800. Beginning with the formation of each respective county to the present, the county clerk's office has issued and kept marriage licenses and certificates. Both marriage transcripts (1882) and marriage applications, beginning in 1906 (with additional family information), may have been used in various counties. Prior to 1940 it was necessary for a couple to obtain a license from the county in which the female resided. If an ancestor's marriage record cannot be located in Indiana, check the Cincinnati marriage records. Cincinnati was a "Gretna Green" (no-questions-asked marriage locale) for Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

About the WPA Records:

The WPA began to index vital records, county-by-county for the entire state of Indiana, but the agency was abolished before the indexing was completed. The WPA index includes marriages for eighty-six of the ninety-two Indiana counties.

About the FHL Records:

The marriage date provide in these entries is usually the date of marriage as given in the original entry. However, when no marriage date is given (e.g., the "marriage return" was not provided to the record keeper), the date of the license is used. In a few cases, a marriage will be listed twice, but in two different counties. This most often happened when a couple obtained a license in one county, but were actually married in another.

Marriage records are great sources for genealogists because they document an individual in a particular place and time as well as provide details about that person's marriage.

It is important that you use the information found in this database to locate your ancestor in the records that this index references. Usually more information is available in the records themselves than is found in an index. For example, marriage records sometimes provide the birth dates and places of the bride and groom, their parents' names, their addresses, and witnesses' names, in addition to the information listed in this index.

Because county clerks are responsible for maintaining marriage records, the originals are kept with them. To obtain a copy, contact the appropriate county clerk and inquire about their research facilities or the procedure for obtaining copies of records. These original records maintained by the county clerk may also be available on microfilm from the FHL and may be some of the sources used to compile this database as described above. For many researchers, it may be easier to check the FHL records first, before contacting the county clerk.

Counties and Years:

This list shows the counties and corresponding year ranges in which the majority of the records included in this database fall. You will occasionally find records for other years not listed here. These other years may be typos, or there just may not be very many marriages for those years and counties represented in this database and therefore, are not included in this list.
