Ball Genealogy & History
Ball is thought to be a descriptive name of early medieval English origin, derived from Old English "bealla" (ball), indicating a short round person. It has also been said to refer to a bald man (having a ball-shaped bald spot), or describing living by a round-shaped hill. Less accepted are derivations from Old Norse "bal", meaning "pain", or Old German "bald", meaning "bold". English Ball family history includes a family seat in Cheshire before the Norman Conquest in 1066. In American Ball genealogy, there was a pre-Mayflower immigrant to Virginia in 1619. The Ball motto "fulcrum dignitatis virtus" means "virtue is the support of dignity".
