Barr Genealogy & History
Barr is an ancient Scottish locational name, referring to the Barr parish area in Ayrshire. Its derivation is from the Gaelic "barr", meaning "height or summit". Legend has it that Barr family history traces back to St. Barr, a great-grandson of Niall the King of Ireland in the 4th century. St. Barr was a missionary to Ayrshire and his namesake island Barra in the Outer Hebrides. Another derivation is from the Old French and Middle English "barre", meaning "gateway", and so could refer to persons living in towns of that description, such as Berr-de-Semilly. Amercan Barr genealogy dates back to the 1650s in Virginia.
