Barrett Genealogy & History
Barrett is an Irish name of two branches. The Norman branch of Barrett genealogy descends from Robert Baret, a knight for William the Conqueror. His men joined Strongbow's 1172 invasion of Ireland and were granted lands in Cork ("Barrett's Country"), the site of their castle. Their name derived from Old French "Baraud", from Germanic "Bernwald", meaning "bear rule". The Anglo-Saxon branch settled in Connacht in 1170, where they became the Lords of Tirawley. Their name derived from Old English "Beornheard", meaning "bear hard or strong". American Barrett family history began in Virginia in 1623. The Barrett motto ,"frangas non flectes: virtus probitas", means "unbowed, unbroken honor and courage".
