Derived from Old English "byrig" (or later "beri"),meaning fortified place, it was bestowed on manor house owners or someone who lived/worked there. Like Berg and Berger, there are many towns throughout Europe with fortifications dating from feudal times, and the name has evolved into "borough" in modern usage. English Berry family history dates back to 1066 with Devon land grants by King William. Richard de Bury (1281-1345) was Lord Chancellor of England.
