Blackburn Genealogy & History
Blackburn is an ancient locational English name, derived from Old English "blaec", meaning black, and "burna", meaning stream. The town of Blackburn was in Lancashire where, in Blackburn family history, they held a family seat (feudal manor) since ancient times. The first recording of the name was also found in Lancashire in 1206, spelled Blakeburn. Other variations include Blackbirn, Blackborn, Blackbyrne, and Blagburn. The Blackburn coat of arms is a silver shield with a black horizontal band and three stars; many versions also include a crescent that was originally associated with the Greek goddess Diana. The first American in Blackburn genealogy settled in Virginia in 1624.
