Briggs Genealogy & History

Briggs is an English or Scottish name, derived from the Old Norse "bryggia", meaning bridge, and could either describe a bridge-keeper or someone living near a bridge. The name may also derive from Anglo-Saxon "brigg", meaning bridge, or Welsh "brig", meaning height. While the name Bridges was used in southern England and Belgium, Briggs was used in northern England and Scotland. Briggs family history dates back at least to 1275 in Wakefield, then Cumberland and Aberdeenshire. Astronomer and mathematician Henry Briggs (1561-1630) invented logarithms and published astral navigational books. American Briggs genealogy dates to Massachusetts in 1621. The family motto, "fortiter et fideliter", means "boldly and faithfully".
