Britt Genealogy & History
Britt is an ethnic name for a Breton, based on the Old French word "Bret". When the Anglo-Saxons invaded in the 6th century, the Celtic Bretons left for France. Many of them returned as knights with William the Conqueror, and no less than nine Brito/Le Breton families are found in the 1085 Domesday Book, having been granted lands in a dozen counties throughout England. The Celts of Strathclyde, Scotland, were also known as Bryttas/Brettas until the 13th century and may be a part of Britt genealogy. Britt family history in America begins with a Brett emigrant to Massachusetts in 1630.
