Britton Genealogy & History
Britton genealogy is typically English or Irish, though it does not mean simply an inhabitant of Britain, as you might expect. The word originally referred to Celtic-speaking inhabitants of Brittany (the tribe usually known as the Bretons) in northern France. These people came in large numbers to Ireland and southwestern England in the sixth and eleventh centuries, and the name is still very common in those places. There are many spelling variations, including Brittain, Briton, and Britney. Britton family history is long and storied and has many notable people. These include English Catholic martyr John Britton, and English soccer player Ian Britton.
