Bryant Genealogy & History
Bryant is a variant spelling of the surname Bryan. Bryan or Bryant family history has a number of paths, since the name actually has two totally separate origins that eventually became merged. One origin is the personal name Brjan or Bryan, which the Normans brought to England in the eleventh century; that name derives from the place name Brionne in Normandy. A variant spelling of the name arose separately in Ireland as the name Brian, from the Gaelic "bre", meaning a hill or a high place and thus nobility or high position. Bryan genealogy includes the famous Irish King Brian Boru. The Irish version of the name became a surname only about forty years after his death.
