Burch Genealogy & History
Burch is an Anglo-Saxon name that could derive from one of two sources. It may have referred to someone from one of two locations called Birch in England (one in Essex and one in Herefordshire). It may have also referred to someone who lived at or near a birch tree or birch wood. In either case, recorded Burch family history begins in England with Walter de la Birche around 1182. Burch genealogy includes John Birch, a Baptist minister and American military intelligence officer who was killed by communists in China in 1945. He is considered by some as the first casualty of the Cold War.
