Callahan Genealogy & History
Callahan is an Irish surname, from the Gaelic O Ceallachain, possibly a form of ceallach, meaning "strife". Callahan family history starts off with King Ceallachan of Munster in the tenth century, though the family lost most of its lands in the Anglo-Norman Conquest a hundred years later. Callahan genealogy includes Vice Admiral William Callaghan; John Callahan, current mayor of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and Americus Callahan, who invented the windowed envelope design now used for virtually all mail. Callahan is also a small town in Florida, named for Daniel Callahan, who built a railroad there in 1854.
