Childers Genealogy & History

Childers genealogy is British, tracing back mostly to Norfolk. It may have originally been either a nickname referring to a person's residence at or near a children's house attached to a monastery, or it may be a locational name referring to a lost village of Norfolk called "Childerhouse." In fourteenth-century Britain, villages were often lost either to the Black Death or to forcible evacuation to make way for sheep pastures. The name comes from the Old English words "cildra" and "hus," meaning "children's house." Childers family history includes the fourth president of Ireland, Erskine Hamilton Childers.
