Coley is derived from the eighth-century Old English colig, meaning swarthy or dark-skinned, a term was used by the light-haired and light-skinned invading Saxons. The family coat of arms is an ermined shield with a wide chevron on the bottom half, with three gold fleurs-de-lis, each having a lion head centered on it. Coley family history tells us that Hugh Coly is the first known of the name in the King Rolls of Yorkshire, England, in 1212.
