The most common point of origin is the town of Conwy in Wales, where the name dates from 1406. In Ireland "Conway" is often an anglicized form of several Irish names, such as "Connmhaigh" or "Connbhuidhe". The first recorded spelling of the name is in 1268 when John de Conweye was recorded in the Chartulary of Glastonbury.
