Cooley Genealogy & History
Cooley is of Anglo-Saxon and Irish origin from two possible sources. It may come from the Old English "colig", meaning "dark" or from "col", meaning "coal" or "charcoal". The latter was often used as a nickname for a dark-complexioned person. The second possibility is an anglicized form of the Gaelic "Mac Cuille" or "Mac Giolla Chuille", meaning "son of Giolla Mhochille" or "servant of St. Mochuille". Cooley family history records a Benjamin Cooley migrating to Springfield, Massachusetts about 1640. Cooley genealogy includes the Florida pioneer William Cooley, the American test pilot David P. Cooley, and the Canadian poet and professor Dennis Cooley.<\p>
