Fry Genealogy & History
Fry genealogy presents researchers with challenges, as the actual definition source is ambiguous. Possibilities include derivations from Anglo-Saxon "freo" or "frig" for "free" (not indentured or a serf), or as a nickname for a small person from the Middle English "fry" ("small", as in our modern expression "small fry"). It is first recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Wiltshire (England) in 1273. Alternate spellings include Frye, Frey, and Frei, among others. Frys arrived in North America as early as 1623. Fry family history includes the playwright Christopher Fry, the architect Edwin Fry, and the Fry chocolate family.
