Graf Genealogy & History

Graf is a German surname, related to the English name Graves, from the Old German graf, which meant both a grove of trees and an overseer or landlord. The latter meaning eventually dominated, and it became the German equivalent of the title of Count, one of the lowest ranks that still belonged in the nobility. Graf family history came to the New World when Philip Graf sailed to America in 1709. Graf genealogy includes German author Oskar Maria Graf, Austrian Parliamentary President Martin Graf, Austrian-German piano maker Conrad Graf, Navy Captain Holly Graf, and former World No. 1 tennis player Steffi Graf.
