Heath Genealogy & History

Heath, like the English name Moore, denotes someone who lived by a moor or heath. Derived from both the Old English word "haeth" and Middle English "hethe", meaning heath/heather (heather was common on the heath), Heath genealogy dates back to English feudal times in Durham where they held a family seat, but Heaths were also in Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Yorkshire. Heath family history includes Nicholas Heath (1501-1578), Lord Chancellor of England, and knight Robert Heath (1575-1649). The Heath motto "espere mieux" means "hope for better". The first Heath to immigrate to America landed in New England in 1620.
