Higgins is an ancient Irish name; in Gaelic it is O'Huigan, derived from "uiging", which means Viking. The Higgins family is first found in Sligo, where they held a feudal manor. They were a branch of the O'Neills clan, which is said to descend from Niall, fourth king of Ireland. Higgins genealogy is made more complicated by the many variations on the name: Higgens, Higginson, Huggins, O'Higgans, and, in Ireland, Hagan.
