It is suggested that it may be a variant of Hayter (Hight); others suggest that it arises from several place names that include the Old English components heah (high) and tun (enclosure, settlement). The name was first found in Sussex and may have been there before the Norman Conquest of 1066. Spelling variants include Heighton, Highton, and Huyton. William Heighton settled in Philadelphia in 1828, and another William Highton settled in Maryland in 1771.
