Hite Genealogy & History

Hite is an English and German name. The English name was originally derived from the Middle English word heyt, meaning height or summit; the name was given to people who lived on a hill or raised ground. The German is an Americanized spelling of Heidt or Heydt (among others), and that name was given to people who lived in an open field. English Hite family history began in Derbyshire, a county in the middle of England. Hite genealogy in America began in 1710, when Jost Hite came to New York; he was later responsible for much of the development of Virginias Shenandoah Valley.
