Hopkins is an English name. It was originally derived from taking "Hobb", a nickname for "Robert", and adding the suffix "kin". "Robert", in turn, is an anglicization of the German "Hrod-berht", meaning "renowned warrior". Hopkins family history begins in Cambridgeshire, with the first recorded instance being of one Nicholas Hobekyn in 1273.
