Hopkins Genealogy & History
Hopkins is an English name. It was originally derived from taking "Hobb", a nickname for "Robert", and adding the suffix "kin". "Robert", in turn, is an anglicization of the German "Hrod-berht", meaning "renowned warrior". Hopkins family history begins in Cambridgeshire, with the first recorded instance being of one Nicholas Hobekyn in 1273. There are many famous people in Hopkins genealogy, including Michael J Hopkins, one of the world' most preeminent mathematicians in algebraic topology, and Anthony Hopkins, an award-winning actor best known for playing Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. The Hopkins motto is "inter primos", which means "among the first".
