Jordan Genealogy & History

Jordan is an English, Irish, and French name, derived from the personal name "Jordan". That appeared in Europe after the Crusades, as it was common practice for soldiers and others to take home water from the river Jordan to baptize their children. The river took its name from the Hebrew "yarden", meaning "to descend." Jordan family history is first recorded in one Robert Jurdan, who lived in Sussex in 1182. Other than famous basketball player Michael Jordan, Jordan genealogy includes former Stanford University President David Starr Jordan and Barbara Jordan, the first southern black woman elected to the House of Representatives.
