Mahan Family History

Mahan Genealogy & History

Mahan is an ancient Irish name. Written as Mac Mathghamhna in its original form, it later became Mac Mathuna. Both names stem from the Old Irish word mathghamhan, meaning bear. The name was first found in County Clare. Mahan family history records numerous variant spellings, including MacMahon, MacMann, MacMahan, McMahon, and MacMohan. The Mahans began settling in the US in large numbers around the time of the great potato famine; Bernard, Francis, James, John, Michael, and Patrick MacMahan arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860. Some members of the Mahan genealogy are the first Oberlin College President Asa Mahan and American geostrategist and historian Alfred Thayer Mahan.
