Moss Genealogy & History

Moss comes from Ireland and English. "Moss" replaced "(Maol)mona" due to a mistake in translating "Mona" as "turf bog". A partial translation from Old Gaelic, "Maol" literally means "tonsured one, devotee, or follower". "Mona" comes from "Munnu", a seventh-century saint. Moss family history gives us their motto as "I flourish in the rose." Moss genealogy has Almer Mosse in the Pipe Rolls as the first recorded use in 1153. Notable Mosses include Utah Senator Frank Edward Moss; English model Kate Moss; and multiple Emmy Award-winner Jeff Moss, Sesame Street writer, composer, and lyricist. He is credited with creating the character of Cookie Monster and writing Rubber Duckie.
