Neely Genealogy & History

Neely genealogy is thoroughly Irish and has many variant spellings in Gaelic and in English. The name originates with the clan Mac Conghaile and ultimately derives from the old Gaelic word cu meaning hound. This was probably the nickname of an ancient clan chieftain. In Ireland today, the various forms of the name (such as Mcneely, Neilly, and McNillie) are most common in Counties Tyrone and Antrim. One Neely coat of arms depicts two red lions rampant below three red stars and above the ocean with a fish in it. Neely family history in the United States begins as early as the nineteenth century.
