Noel evolved from the pre-tenth-century Old French word meaning Christmas. It was most likely brought to England after 1066 by the Normans. It was often given to a child born during the Christmas holiday. Some of the variations are Naul, Knells, Naull, Naulls, Noale, Nowell, and Nowil. Noel family history has an early recording of William Nowell in the county of Huntingdon in 1248. The family motto is to every man his own.
