Pearson originates in medieval English and is a patronymic form of Piers, a variant of Peter. It was adapted by the English from Old French "Pierre". Ultimately it stems from the Greek "petros", meaning rock. The name was popular among Christians, as it was given to Simon by Jesus, denoting that Peter would be "the rock" on which he would build. Pearson family history gives us the first recording of the name in 1327 in the Exchequer Lay Subsidy Rolls of Somerset as Richard Peresone.
