Shields Genealogy & History
Shields genealogy is British or Scottish. The word comes from a medieval English word, "schele", meaning a small hut, cottage, or shelter. This comes from the Old English "sceol", meaning the same thing. It was originally a topographical name referring to someone who lived in or near a schele or series of them, especially numerous in the eastern area of the Scottish-English border. Scheles were usually temporary dwellings for shepherds, so the original Shields family may have been shepherds. Shields family history in the United States includes early Virginia settler Reverend Archibald Shields as well as Eliz Shields, who settled in 1724 in Carolina.
