The Gaelic origin is as an anglicization of the name Mac an Gheaire, Gheaire deriving from "giorr" or "short." There are written recordings of the name in Dorset as early as the late twelfth century and in Somerset in the thirteenth. Short family history includes famous Canadian comedian Martin Short.
