Smallwood Family History

Smallwood Genealogy & History

Smallwood is a topographical name stemming from the pre-seventh-century Old English word smael plus wudu, meaning a small wooded area. The family is believed to have had its ancestral home in Cheshire, England, since before the Norman Conquest in 1066. The family crest is an arm holding a wreath of oak. Smallwood family history gives the first known recording of the name as William Smalwud in the Essex Curia Rolls in Essex, England, in 1220. Some members of the Smallwood genealogy are actor, vocalist, and author Tucker Smallwood; music business manager Rod Smallwood; and the first Newfoundland Premier Joseph Roberts (Joey) Smallwood.
