Steele Genealogy & History
Steele is an English and Scottish surname, originally a nickname for someone reliable or strong or perhaps a foundry worker. Derived from Old English "style" or Middle English "stele", meaning steel, the Steele family history dates back to 1066, when they were granted lands in Cheshire by King William, where they were the lords of the feudal manor Giddy Hall near Sandbach. When Sandbach was razed in 1070, many of the family emigrated north to Scotland. American Steele genealogy includes the variations Steal, Steeles, and Steill, with emigration to Virginia and Massachusetts in the 1630s. Red lions on the crest and coat of arms signify great warriors.
