One is the Old English word stigol, meaning a steep hill or climb, and the second is the word stigel, meaning a stile, a means for people to pass over or through a fence or other boundary. In either case, the name is topographical, referring to someone who lived near one of these features. Alternate spellings include Stickle, Style, and Stegel. Stiles family history in the United States extends back at least to the seventeenth century, including settlers in New England, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
