Stokes is an ancient Welsh name that is also found in England and Scotland. Derived from the Old English "stocc" and Middle English "stoke", meaning trunk of a tree, it referred to a place of stump-clearings. Prior to the Norman Conquest, Stokes family history was located in Normandy, France; afterwards, the family was found in Pembrokeshire, Wales, where the family's feudal manor was located. In England, Stokes families were located in a variety of places called Stoke/Stokes/Stoches in Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Somerset, and Warwickshire.
