Summers Genealogy & History

Summers is a Scottish, English and German name, with a myriad of spelling variations: Somers, Somerton, Somyr, Simmers, Sumers, Sumeter, Sumpter, Sunter, and Symers. It is thought to have two derivations: from Old French "somier" meaning someone driving pack-horses, or a baptismal name for someone born in summertime. Summers family history is documented in the 12th century in Edinburgh, Scotland, but even earlier in Worcestershire, England, where the Summers family were lords of the feudal manor called Whiteladies. Famous in Summers genealogy was Sir George Somers (1554-1610); the Bermuda Islands were first called "Somers Isles", and King James I licensed him to colonize Virginia and Maine.
