Temple Genealogy & History
The Temple surname is possibly linked to the Knights Templar, 12th-century crusaders. Unfortunately a name-based association with the Knights of Templar gives no indication of whether the name-bearer was a Knight or merely employed by one. The order, also known as the knights of St. John, was founded in 1118 but was disbanded in 1312 because of political pressure on Pope Clement V. Temple family history shows that the name was first found in Cheshire. Temple genealogy is said to come from Leofric, the Saxon Earl of Chester, who died before the Norman Conquest of 1066. It also includes actress and former Ambassador Shirley Temple Black.
