It was originally derived from the Aramaic personal name Thomas, which means the twin; being the name of an early Christian saint, it has been popular at least since the Crusades. Thomason also contains the suffix �son, meaning son of. The origins of Thomason family history are unclear, but the first recorded instance of the surname is believed to be Henneko Thom (an alternate spelling), who lived in Hamburg, Germany, in 1252; in Wales, there were early Thomasons in Cheshire. Thomason genealogy includes Clyde Thomason, the first enlisted marine who was given the Medal of Honor (albeit posthumously) in WWII.
