Tucker Genealogy & History
Tucker is an English/Irish name with three possible derivations. In southwest England, a tucker was a towel maker, derived from Old English "tucian", meaning torment, referring to softening cloth by beating. Tucker family history in Devonshire included a feudal home. Alternatively, tucker could be a nickname for a brave or generous person, from either French "tout-coeur" (meaning all-heart) or Gaelic O'Tuachair (meaning descendant of the brave one). In Ireland, there were two distinct Tucker septs, in northern Ulster and southern Munster. Three (mythical) sea-horses on the coat of arms symbolize water-power. Fittingly, Tucker genealogy includes early explorers and settlers in the New World: Maine in 1602 and Virginia in 1608.
