Urban Genealogy & History
Urban is an English and German surname, originally from the Latin noun urbs, meaning city, yielding urbanus, meaning a city-dweller. It was initially found in Austria but spread to more heavily settled places, particularly the British Isles, as the land area there was rather more limited than in mainland Europe and London was a developing city in the Middle Ages. Urban family history comes to the New World in 1752 with the journey of Augustus Urban to Pennsylvania. Urban genealogy lays claim to a few illustrious people, such as country singer Keith Urban, colonial governor Benjamin d'Urban, and actor Karl Urban.
