Walden Genealogy & History
The name Walden comes from the Old English wealh (stranger/foreigner/slave) + denu (valley). Walden family history records that around 1066, three locations in Britain were known as Walden, meaning the valley of the foreigners. Some have suggested that our modern word Wales is related to wealh. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of Alice de Waledene, in 1273, in the Hundred Rolls of Cambridge. Humphrey and Robert Walden settled in Virginia in 1623. Notable members of the Walden genealogy include Henry Walden, who built the first American monoplane in 1909, and R. B. Walden, a Louisiana politician.
