Walton Genealogy & History
Walton is an English surname originally signifying someone from a town called Walton. Derived from Old English "wald", meaning woods, and "tun", meaning hamlet, it referred to a village in the woods. However, other possibilities include a "lost" medieval village called "Wolton" in southern England, and a derivation from Old English "weall-tun", meaning a building of stone. In England, Walton family history began with a feudal manor in Lancashire; American Waltons came to Virginia in 1623. A noted member of Walton genealogy is Valentine Walton, son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell and signatory on King Charles I's death warrant. The motto, "murus aeneus virtus", means "virtue is a wall of brass".
