Winkler Genealogy & History

Winkler is an English, Dutch, German, and Jewish name with several possible origins. At least in England, it could have started as a habitational name given to people who lived in the Flemish settlement Wynkel. Alternately, it could have started as the nickname winkle, referring to periwinkles. One of the first records in Winkler family history is Winchul, an alternate spelling, found around 1200 in East Cheshire. Early Winklers have also been found in Saxony, Germany. Winkler genealogy includes Clemens Winkler, a German scientist who discovered the element germanium, and Henry Winkler, who played Fonzie on the popular TV show Happy Days.
