It is a diminutive of St. Theodorus, an early bishop in Switzerland, who was also known as St. Theodore of Grammont, St. Theodule, and St. Joder. The family later become prominent in Westphalia, close to Switzerland. Yoder family history journeyed to the western hemisphere with Barbara Yoder and her sons Jacob and Christian, who sailed to Philadelphia in 1742.
