California Genealogy & LDS Family History Centers

There are many living in the state of California today that are interested in learning more about the origins of their families. Fortunately for these individuals, there are free resources available in their state to help them trace their ancestry efficiently and accurately. California family history centers are located throughout the state, providing free resources and a volunteer staff to help Californians find their roots. These facilities are offshoots of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. All of the California offices are operated by the California LDS Church, but are available to the general public as well. Contact a center before visiting, since hours vary from location to location.

When beginning your California genealogy research, the University of California, Riverside's Center for Biographical Studies and Research is a fabulous resource for historic California newspapers. Their California Digital Newspaper Collection offers free public online access to indexed, digitized newspapers.

Another free resource for San Francisco Bay Area content is SF Genealogy. Dig deep into this website to find an amazing hodgepodge of information, particularly for records that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. Be sure to check out their research tips.
