The state of Florida issued a law in 1927 that centralized all birth and death records for the state. Before this time, each city and county were responsible for their own record-keeping, leading to inconsistencies within the archives. The oldest known records in Florida are located in Key West and date all the way back to 1865. Currently, the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics is the central collection point for Florida birth, death and divorce records, with a complete archive of more than 25 million vital records on file for the state.
