The Kaufman County Clerk has been in existence since 1848 and is still charged with the important task of recording various types of documents related to the county. The Kaufman County Clerk is responsible for collecting and maintaining mental health records, death certificates, marriage licenses, assumed name or business certificates, in addition to birth certificates. This office is also responsible for recording all land and real estate records, as well as records related to the County Courts at Law, Commissioners Court, and Probate and Juvenile courts.
Although the Texas Department of Health, Vital Statistics Bureau began collecting statewide birth records after 1903, the Kaufman County Clerk's birth records date back to 1869 and are maintained by the Kaufman County Clerk.
