The New England Historic Genealogical Society is home to an enormous collection of historically important genealogical records. Founded in 1845, the New England Historic Genealogical Society has been an important force in securing a wide variety of record types, dating back to the fourteenth century. These records are not confined to the U.S., but include family histories and records from other countries, like England, Ireland and Scotland. Located in Boston, the New England Historic Genealogical Society boasts an eight-story research center filled with over 20 million items related to genealogy!

In addition to the Massachusetts Marriage Records Index, included in the New England Historic Genealogical Society's collection are cemetery, birth and death records, tax records, immigration records, historic society records, maps, atlases, diaries, family Bibles, journals, town histories, and military records, just to name a few. Genealogists and individuals are welcome to research these collections, and many are compiled in online databases. The Massachusetts Marriage Records Index is one of these and can be searched online for free. An image of the original marriage record listing is provided, and these often provide additional insightful information, such as parents of the bride that were sometimes listed in the record.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society's research library is open to the public; however, individuals who are not members must buy a day pass (currently $15) to gain entrance. Some of the other online databases are only available to members, so making an in-person visit enables the viewing of all record collections present. The New England Historic Genealogical Society's trained staff is available to answer questions, and hard copies can be made of Massachusetts marriage records for a nominal per page fee.
