The Maine State Archives holds a list indexing all the men who enlisted in the 1st Maine Infantry with the purpose of serving in the Mexican War. Although the 1st Maine Infantry regiment was never on active duty, the information collected is an important piece of American history. Each man who enlisted provided the following information: name, place of birth, age at enlistment, complexion, hair color and height. Also supplied was each man's occupation, address or town of residence, date of enlistment, rank and term or number of years enlisted during the Mexican War.
The Mexican War was fought between 1846 and 1848 and involved Americans invading Mexico after Texas was annexed to the U.S. in 1845. The Mexicans resisted the release of Texas, even though the territory hadn't been under Mexican rule after the Texas Revolution on 1836. This war resulted in Mexico being forced to give its northern territories like Alta California and New Mexico to the U.S. The Mexican War Soldiers Index represents the actual records stored by the Maine Archives.
