Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. began compiling this list of early marriage records for the state of South Carolina when he realized no such records officially existed. The state does not provide a single source for marriage licenses that date prior to 1800. It was not until 1911 that South Carolina made a legal requirement to keep marriages officially on file. Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. began the work of scanning newspapers, church records, pension applications and other sources where marriage evidence might be found. He was able to put together this list of more than 4,700 marriages that took place in the early years of the state, and he is still on the lookout for additional information on certain South Carolina families.
The South Carolina Early Marriage Records by Paul R. Sarrett, Jr.are recorded in alphabetical order, first by the groom's last name and then by the bride's last name.
